HAMILTON, Mass. — After calling for Shawn Oliver to terminate his lieutenant governor campaign and demanding his resignation, Oliver withdrew on Sunday and has requested privacy for his family. His resignation will become official when Minogue takes office as governor.
Minogue hopes Oliver will be given privacy as he recovers his health and focuses on his family. To be clear, Oliver will not be Minogue’s lieutenant governor.
Several states, including Maine and New Hampshire, operate without a lieutenant governor. Massachusetts law already sets the order of succession if the governor is out of office.
Moving forward, leaving the position unfilled will save taxpayers well over $300,000 in salary and security costs. For voting, the process will remain the same. Minogue asks all supporters to select the Minogue/Oliver ticket because the ballots have already been printed and cannot be changed. Any marks or deletions will invalidate the vote for Minogue. Once again, Shawn Oliver will not be lieutenant governor despite the printing.
“Hard-working families and small businesses across Massachusetts are being asked to do more with less,” Minogue said. “The people on Beacon Hill should be held to the same standard.”
Minogue has run as an outsider from the start of this campaign, and that mission will continue as a new kind of governor. That means holding people accountable quickly, putting the Commonwealth ahead of politics, and giving taxpayers a government that answers to them.
“As governor, I will put the Commonwealth first,” said Minogue. “That starts with accountability, something Massachusetts has not seen from Governor Healey.”
