Healey Skips Debate for Interview, Admits Gas Tax Holiday Was “Badly Needed,” Offers No Plan to Fight for It

DEDHAM, Mass. — After the Boston Herald declared Maura Healey lost two debates against Mike Minogue, Healey chose a live interview on Boston 25 rather than face voters again. There she conceded what Massachusetts families already know: relief at the pump is badly needed. She offered no answer on how she would fight for it.

Healey has said, “There’s only so much a governor can do.” Yet she has called for a gas holiday that would last only two months, expiring right after Election Day. Healey has not called for a special session on the issue, and her own party’s House leaders left it out of the year-end budget. Her administration would only say it will “continue” to push.

“Maura Healey says relief is badly needed, then proposes a gimmick that disappears right after the election,” said Mike Minogue. “Families can’t pay their bills with news conferences and press releases that are just there for show.”

Minogue was first to call for suspending the gas tax. He went further, calling to eliminate it altogether. As recently as 2022, Healey dismissed a gas tax holiday as a gimmick. Only after prices climbed and Minogue took the lead did she change course.

“I know what it takes to work hard and build the American dream,” Minogue said. “Under Maura Healey’s failed leadership, people working just as hard can’t get ahead. The system is set up for political insiders, and she’s keeping that system in place.”

At 24 cents a gallon, the gas tax is a cost every working family pays at every fill-up. Minogue will end it and pay for the change by finding waste, fraud, and corruption in the state budget.
